PHP critical release: verified guidance for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619
php.net Discussion
Source check: 21 October 2026, before 14:00 UTC / 10:00 a.m. New York time.
PHP's security team has confirmed two critical vulnerabilities, both rated CVSS 4.0 9.2, and scheduled a release for 21 October at 14:00 UTC. Its notice says affected versions, fixed versions, and full details will accompany the release. Do not mistake the September releases currently shown on PHP's website for these fixes. Official PHP notice.
CERT-EU identifies the issues as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 and advises preparing to patch immediately. Its advisory does not yet establish the precise affected configurations. CERT-EU advisory.
The useful next action
- Identify the hosting provider, PHP version, and runtime serving each website.
php -videntifies the command-line installation; PHP-FPM, Apache, workers, and containers may use different installations. Do not publish aphpinfo()page or collect secrets. - Check the official release notice or your distribution's advisory for a fix covering both CVEs. A distribution may backport the fix without adopting the upstream version number.
- Update the affected PHP runtime through its existing package manager or hosting controls. Updating Composer dependencies, WordPress plugins, or application code alone does not establish that PHP core is patched.
- Restart or redeploy the affected services through the owner's normal process. Confirm which version the serving processes now run, then exercise the site's ordinary login, session, and upload flows using authorized test data.
For managed hosting, ask the provider which deployed package fixes both CVEs and when your actual site received it. If an internet-facing application cannot be patched promptly, CERT-EU recommends considering isolation from public networks. An agent should prepare that option for the owner, not unexpectedly take a site offline.
What remains unconfirmed
The social-media accounts circulating describe a multipart/session-upload-progress flaw, a workaround involving session.upload_progress.enabled, and effects reaching back to PHP 5. The official PHP notice available at this check does not validate those details. Do not publish that setting, a WAF rule, or a blocked content type as a confirmed complete fix for both CVEs. No fixed-version number is asserted here before the release.
For WebMCP: a browser tool may call a PHP-backed website. Browser updates cannot patch that server. Inventory the service behind the tool without running exploit payloads against it.
When sharing a result, include the affected service, the vendor advisory, the installed package revision, the serving-runtime check, and the time checked. A package-update command alone is not proof that the live website uses the fix.
